As I pulled up in front of Sonia’s house, I couldn’t help but notice how the neighborhood Maya lived in contrasted with Juanita’s. Both sides of the street were lined with perfectly designed bi-level homes with perfect lawns. This was definitely not the barrio. According to Sonia, there were few if any people of color in this area.

I reached over and patted Maya gently on the hand before we both got out of the car. “Everything is going to work out,” I whispered to her as we approached the front steps.

As soon as Maya opened the front door, Sonia appeared looking nervous and tired. “M’ija,” Sonia gasped. Where have you been? I’ve been calling everywhere trying to find out where you went.”

Maya stared at Sonia, and for a moment I questioned whether I should intercede or keep quiet.

“I’m so sorry, Mom,” Maya finally whispered.

“I’m sorry, too, m’ija,” Sonia said. “I’m just glad you’re home.” Then, all of a sudden, they were both crying and hugging each other while I watched in relief.
